Gills' 2-0 home win against Tranmere last Saturday not only delivered a first defeat of the season for our opponents, but gave us back-to-back victories for the first time since January.

After an even first half, the Gills stepped up a gear with two well-worked goals. Logan Dobbs headed home Ronan Hale's cross in front of the Rainham End, capping a meteoric rise from the youth team and potentially earning himself a Wikipedia entry following his rejection earlier this month for being insufficiently notable. Ronan then got on the scoresheet himself, with Garath McCleary providing a peach of a ball that found its way past the Tranmere defenders, leaving the scorer with only the keeper to beat. There were immediate concerns as Ronan crumpled to the turf after slotting home, but thankfully the injury was a "whack" rather than anything more serious.

GA lauded the performance as one of the best at home during his tenure, with the result putting a gloss on our start to the season, with just one defeat in six and five games unbeaten. The formative league table looks congested already, with just three points separating Barnet in top spot and us in 11th.

Tomorrow we face an even stiffer test as second-place Bristol Rovers come to town with their delightful management duo in tow, quite possibly for their Gas swansong given the interest Hibernian have shown in appointing ex-BFSE as their new manager this week.

Evans has been in charge at the Mem since December 2025, taking over with the club in the relegation zone. Not only has he managed to reshape himself, but he also carried out significant work on the Rovers squad with nine new signings in the January window. The tanker initially turned slowly, with eight defeats in his first 12 matches before the new arrivals made their mark, recording 11 victories from their final 14 matches to propel them to a 14th-place finish.

It's been all change again this summer, 12 new arrivals replacing nine departures. An opening-day defeat against newly promoted York failed to dampen spirits as it was followed up with a four-game winning run, ended last weekend away at Grimsby, who inflicted a 2-0 defeat, with midfielder Tommy Leigh earning a suspension after a stupid red card for an altercation off the ball.

With Ronan Hale potentially absent tomorrow, GA will need to assess his other forward options. Will Goodwin could be in contention after closing on a return from his own injury incurred at Rochdale, while Lamin Sillah, who netted in that away game having replaced the former, could also find a place in the starting XI. Others who are nearing a return from injury include Ethan Coleman, Zane Albarus and Sam Tabares, although Bradley Dack has unfortunately suffered a setback that will doubtless provide further ammo for those who think his new contract was an error of judgement.

This fixture has been in the calendar for 127 years and tomorrow will be our 148th meeting, Gills with 57 wins, Rovers with 62 and just 28 draws. Gills have the upper hand in recent times, winning 10 of the last 16 meetings home and away, Rovers with just three wins in that time, their last coming at Priestfield in March with Gills in the middle of a run of five successive defeats at the time. For the highlights, it's back to December 2011 and a brace of pens from Danny Kedwell, with Montrose and Jackman also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win, ex-Gill Mustapha Carayol with Rovers' goal.

The attendance might be slightly up on last weekend, with around 100 more tickets sold than the comparable point last week. Rovers should also eclipse the 349 Tranmere fans that filled the end blocks of the Gordon Road last Saturday. A dry but cloudy afternoon with warm temperatures will hopefully entice a few more POTD attendees to come along and back an improving Gills side.

If Gills can get a result tomorrow, it would strengthen the view that the division is seemingly lacking any real stand-out teams this season. Few of the pre-season favourites have started well and, although there remain 40 games to be played, the five unbeaten sides have already accumulated 19 draws between them, suggesting a reasonably level playing field at this stage.

If tomorrow is to be ex-BFSE's final Rovers game, it would be lovely to send him off with a defeat and a vociferous goodbye.
