The Official Tranmere Rovers Match Thread (Sponsored by Vulpes Vulpes "for all your fox in the box needs")

We finally got our season up and running last time out with an excellent 1-4 away win at newly promoted Rochdale. After a bleak few goalscoring campaigns, how good was it to see James Brophy net not one, but two Goal of the Season contenders? The first, which opened the scoring, was curled delightfully into the top corner. His second was simply breathtaking as he drove through midfield from halfway before slaloming past statuesque Dale defenders inside the box and rolling it past Ramming in the home goal.

It wasn't all smiles and plaudits, though, as our staggering run of bad luck with injuries continued. New boy Zech Obiero lasted all of 17 minutes on his debut before somehow managing to damage both hamstrings, injuries that will leave him out of contention for months, not weeks. Will Goodwin also came off injured at the same time. Thankfully, both their replacements showed their quality, Eli King especially, who looks exactly the sort of midfielder we've been crying out for for seasons.

As the Gills were earning their first win at Spotland, tomorrow's opponents, Tranmere, were notching their second victory of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Oldham at Prenton Park, leaving them unbeaten in fourth place. It's been a very impressive start to the new season for Rovers, a side who have finished progressively lower down the pyramid in each of the last seven seasons and only avoided the drop to non-league football by two points in 2025/26.

Rovers, under the steady hand of summer appointment Darrell Clarke, have recruited well during the close season, pulling off quite the coup in attracting Tom Ince to the club alongside hugely experienced former Wales international Will Vaulks. Another new arrival, Courtney Baker-Richardson, has form for giving the Gills the runaround at both Crewe and Newport. Eleven permanent signings and five loanees have replaced a dozen departing players, including Omari Patrick, who was strongly rumoured to be heading in this direction back in January but now finds himself at Forest Green.

On the injury front, we now have Obiero, Gordon and Harris out for a good while. Abarus, Coleman and Dack are allegedly nearing a return, while Antwi is MIA again after a late substitute appearance at Chesterfield. Goodwin's injury at Rochdale was not as bad as first feared, and he could feature in the squad tomorrow. We still look a little light up top; however, if the midfield can contribute to the goal tally as it did last weekend, we might just make do.

On the pitch, we've finally managed to attract a "fox in the box" to attack the Rainham End. Sadly for head groundsman Haydn Lawrance, our new arrival came with some sharp claws and used them to dig a sizeable scrape on the edge of the six-yard box at the home end, damaging the pristine playing surface at Priestfield. Whether it's the same fox that was last seen a couple of years back charging the length of the pitch and up the Brian Moore Stand in an attempt to avoid our dreadful football is unknown, but I, for one, welcome our new vulpine overlord.

Away from the pitch, the long-awaited new Fanzone will be opening from 1.00pm tomorrow, featuring live music, a variety of grub, an array of Shepherd Neame beverages and a Q&A session with Liam Gordon and Ethan Coleman. Surely the most pressing question is: where are the self-service beer pumps?

Tomorrow is the 45th meeting between the sides, with the Gills recording just 11 wins to Rovers' 15, while 18 draws have been the most common result. At Priestfield, we've done well in recent years, winning four of the last five meetings against Tranmere. The Wirral side haven't won here since 2010. For the highlights, we go back nearly 20 years (how did that happen?) to January 2007 and a game under the lights at Priestfield. An own goal set us on our way before a header from Andrew Crofts sealed a 2-0 victory before half-time.

The first win of the season hasn't had a dramatic impact on ticket sales, with just under 400 remaining in the Rainham End, and a total of 2442 around the home ends, very similar to the numbers prior to our last home game against Northampton. Tranmere were allocated 474 seats in the Gordon Road Stand end blocks and will likely take up the majority of that number given their unbeaten start to the season.

The positivity resulting from our win and performance last time out have been a refreshing change, it's now time to start delivering at Priestfield as we face high flyers in back-to-back home games, with the artist formerly known as BFSE visiting with early pacesetters Bristol Rovers next weekend. We've recorded just four wins from our last 22 home matches, a miserable statistic acknowledged by GA in his pre-match comments. Successful campaigns are built on solid home foundations, the Priestfield crowds have been starved of entertainment for too long, although the green shoots on display last weekend indicate that maybe a turnaround might not be too far off. Four points from the next two games would be a decent return and show that this new GA side can compete with the top sides.
