The Official Chesterfield Match Thread (Sponsored by an Apathetic Cow "for all your "Meh" needs")

Following Saturday's narrow defeat at Crewe, Gills make another trip northward to take on another side with serious play-off ambitions in Chesterfield. Even the most ardent optimists (or hopefuls) among our support must know that our own ambitions in that vein have died a death, even three points tonight is merely delaying the inevitable string of dead rubbers we must endure for the next three months.

Chesterfield won't be an easy nut to crack, only table leaders Bromley have lost fewer games this season. The Spireites main issue, similar to ourselves, has been too many draws, 13 in total, a mere handful of those turned into the full three points would have them in contention for the automatic spots. Despite only losing once so far in 2026, Paul Cook's side remain outside the play-offs by a single point from Crewe, although a win tonight will see them leapfrog the Cheshire side and go level on matches played.

Tonight's opponents had a busy transfer window, with seven new arrivals bolstering both ends of the pitch. Two arrivals from Canadian football were joined by Will Dickson converting his loan deal from Man City into a permanent transfer, plus journeyman striker Freddie Ladapo adding to their striking options. Lee Bonis and Dilan Markanday lead the way in the goalscoring charts with 7 and 6 goals respectively, Armando Dobra chipping in too, netting the consolation at Priestfield as we triumphed 4-1 in what is probably the zenith of yet another disappointing Gillingham season.

There's little point guessing at the selection and formation for tonight as it changes with such regularity. We often hear players are back from injury and raring to go only for them to be entirely absent from the squad and it seems unlikely Cirino, Wyllie or Euan Williams will feature despite being allegedly match fit. Masterson and Khumbeni remain out, while the elder statesmen in Vokes and McCleary will potentially drop to the bench as the fixture follows hot on the heels of Saturday's defeat.

We enjoy the lead in the head to head, 32 wins to 23 with 18 draws. The goal difference is also heavily in our favour, I can't for the life of me think why that might be... Tonight is our seventh visit to Chessie's new(ish) stadium and our record there is a dead heat, two wins, two draws and two defeats. For the highlights it's back to October 2015 and goals from John Egan, Rory Donnelly and loanee Harry Lennon giving Gills a 1-3 away win that left us third in League One. How much difference a decade makes.

Having been let down by the Gills grapevine re: tickets sold for Crewe, I have avoided looking for the figure for tonight's encounter. What is almost certain is that it will be far a greater number than this season or our recent form deserves.

Safe travels if you're making the trip, I must admit that my enthusiasm (as you can probably tell) for this one is almost nil. Despite being at the corresponding Tuesday night fixture last season when the play-offs were also out of reach, the idea of spending 26 quid on a ticket, plus another near two hour journey on the miserable M1 to watch us huff and puff doesn't appeal. Even the concept of paying 15 quid to watch it from the comfort of my sofa feels a stretch, were the season to officially end tonight I'd be perfectly happy.
