Gills finally managed to stop the rot at Walsall on Good Friday, coming away with a point, having been both behind and leading in the game. Not only did we not lose, but two of our strikers actually managed to find the net: Hale calmly finishing off one of the most incisive Gills moves we've seen in months, and Palmer-Houlden reacting quickest to some calamitous Saddlers defending to give us the briefest of leads, as our inability to defend set pieces bit us on the arse again.

We shouldn't get too excited, though. The point, while welcome, is only the tiniest step forward, having been sprinting backwards for months, while the Walsall forum repeatedly suggests that we're still "one of the worst teams we've seen all season". There's plenty of evidence to suggest that, on the rare occasions we've put in a decent performance in the last few months (e.g. Harrogate), we're more than capable of reverting to type in the very next game to undo any good work (e.g. Bromley). We have to make it count tomorrow.

Our opponents this Easter Monday are Accrington Stanley. The Lancashire side will be buoyed by an excellent win last time out against Crewe, a result that ended their own miserable run of eight without a win and left them two places above us in 15th. Stanley have had a reasonably solid season, given their stature, with a decent Christmas and early 2026 run of six wins in eight leaving them with half an eye on possibly sneaking a play-off berth, before the aforementioned miserable run of two points from 24 put pay to those ambitions. As those of us who basked in the August sunshine at the reverse fixture on the opening day will attest, Accy are a robust, hard-working side who know their limitations but who have bags of experience in wily old stagers such as Seamus Conneely, Paddy Madden and Shaun Whalley; they will certainly offer a stiff test to a side who are winless in seven matches.

Friday's performance showed the difference a reasonably balanced side, full of square pegs in square holes, can make. Khumbeni alleviated our lack of central midfielders with his return and certainly offered more than his previous appearance, which saw him hooked at half-time away to Cambridge. Morris has been given the nod on the 'keeper front for the last two, although Turner had the two games before that, so it would be no surprise to see him back between the sticks tomorrow given Ainsworth's previous indecision. As this fixture is the deadest of rubbers, it would be good to see a few more of the youngsters given some minutes. A total of nine of our youth team (Waldock, Dayal, Beszant, Luxton, Sargent, Dobbs, Bridle, Webster and Holtam) have made it onto the pitch for the first team this season, a number that feels higher than in previous campaigns, and none of them have let the side down, having done so.

Gills have won exactly half of the 24 previous meetings, Accy with six wins, two of those coming at Priestfield, including last season's 1–2 victory that came at the outset of our traditional October plummet down the table. For the highlights, it's the first meeting of the sides after a 47-year gap: August 2008, and the greatest sprinter we ever signed, Dennis Oli, sclaffing one home to give us a late 1–0 win.

The Rainham End ticket barometer indicates that a point at Walsall is somehow insufficient to reignite the passions of stayaway fans, 332 tickets remain available behind the goal, with over 2,200+ unsold seats across the home ends. Accy, for their part, could well become the fifth side this season to bring fewer than 100 fans to Priestfield, it's certainly one hell of a trek through Bank Holiday traffic, fair play to all those making the trip.

Having re-read for spelling and clarity, it would appear this is the least negative match thread I've penned in a good while, maybe all the snaffled Easter Eggs and sunshine are boosting my mood. I remain in no doubt that the Gills can fix that, though.
